Red Wine on Mattress

Medium·⏱ 20–40 min + drying
  1. Strip bedding immediately. Blot the mattress with a clean towel — do not rub.

  2. Mix 1 tbsp dish soap + 2 tbsp hydrogen peroxide.

  3. Apply with a cloth, blotting gently. Let sit 5 minutes.

  4. Blot away with a clean damp cloth (cold water only).

  5. Sprinkle baking soda over the area generously and leave for at least 1 hour to draw out moisture.

  6. Vacuum up the baking soda. Point a fan at the mattress and allow to dry completely before remaking the bed (minimum 4 hours).

What you'll need

  • Cold water
  • Dish soap
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Baking soda
  • White vinegar

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Never saturate a mattress — it takes a very long time to dry, leading to mould.
  • Do not use coloured cloths that may transfer dye.

Pro tip

A mattress protector eliminates this problem entirely for future spills. Put one on as soon as the mattress is dry.

⚠ Warning

Hydrogen peroxide may lighten darker mattress covers. Test on a hidden edge first.
