Candle Wax on Cotton & Clothing

Medium·⏱ 15–25 min
  1. Let the wax harden completely — do not try to remove soft wax.

  2. Place ice in a plastic bag and hold against the wax for 5 minutes to ensure it's fully hard.

  3. Snap/flake off hardened wax with a blunt butter knife.

  4. Place a paper bag on each side of the stain and press with a medium-hot iron — the wax transfers to the paper. Move to clean paper sections as they absorb wax.

  5. Apply rubbing alcohol to any remaining residue, then dish soap.

  6. Machine wash cold.

What you'll need

  • Ice cubes
  • Butter knife
  • Brown paper bag or parchment paper
  • Iron
  • Dish soap
  • Rubbing alcohol

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Never try to remove soft or melted wax — you'll push it deeper into the fabric.
  • Don't use too hot an iron — test on a hidden area first.

Pro tip

If the candle was coloured, the wax may have pigment — treat with rubbing alcohol after the iron step to remove any dye residue.
