Coffee

Coffee stains come from tannins and, if milk was added, proteins. Tannins are water-soluble when fresh but become increasingly resistant when heated or dried.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my coffee stain come back after washing?

This happens when the stain was partially treated — tannin molecules left in the fabric migrate to the surface when heat is applied in the dryer. Re-treat and wash in cold water.

Does milk coffee stain worse?

Yes — coffee with milk adds a protein component that can be heat-set. Enzyme cleaners are more effective for milky coffee stains.

Can I use hot water on a coffee stain?

No — hot water sets the tannin stain. Always use cold water for rinsing and washing.
